Current Trends in Home Design

There are many home trends that come and go, stick around, and fade out. I want to be sure that you choose wisely in your designs especially if it is not your "forever" home. The current trends at this moment are lots of light, natural color pallets, lots of white, and cream tones, and some plants for added texture and color. Now a few years ago we were all raving about all 50 shades of grey!

I wanted to cover the basics of what will always be timeless and what areas to focus the most on in your home, even if it is your "forever" home. First things first, the most important rooms in a house are the following, the kitchen, bathrooms, Master Bedroom, and then the yard depending on where you are. Everyone enjoys some outdoor space.

The Kitchen

I would suggest keeping the kitchen area bright and as clean as possible, with some small added colors for detail and character. I personally love a white cabinet kitchen, stainless steel appliances, and bight shinning windows. You can also add a multitone style, where you would do top cabinets white, and the bottom a darker color for contrast or add a bit of color with the backsplash. Which has been really hip these days. Below are some examples of what people are doing in their homes.

The Bathroom

This is similar to the kitchen, keeping this room bright and clean is essential. It is normally one of the smaller rooms in the entire home but is the most frequently used room in the entire house. So making it appear larger with light colors is key. Using tile is usually the best way to go for a more upscale and modern look. The best part about tile is that you can go in any direction, be as creative as you can possibly be, or keep it modern and sleek. Another important thought is what mirror you add to the space. These days, people are avoiding the "Medicine cabinet" look when designing their bathrooms. Depending on if you can creatively hide the infamous "Medicine Cabinet" more and more homeowners are opting out of this trend. Another big decision is if you add a tub, a shower, or you do the tub/shower combo. With so many options, I would remind you that less is always more in smaller spaces. Always think about the resale value and of course if you do have more than one bathroom in your home, you can be a bit more creative with the designs.

The Master Bedroom

Your very own sacred space, where you leave your worries at the door, climb into bed, and drift off to peaceful bliss. If your bedroom does not make you feel like you are entering your vacation, you have some work to do! What I think people should focus on is the main focal point of the room, which is always the bed. Your bed should not be off to the corner of the room or sideways against the wall. It should always be in the middle of the room. The bed frame is not always so important as the comforter set you have displayed for the world to see! If you are selling your home, the bedsheets should be bright white or cream colors, there should be those pesky decorative pillows us woman love to keep around. It should always be made and look tidy. It should also have flowy dreamy curtains that let enough light in but can also be dark if needed. The main items that should be in a bedroom are the following, Bed, nightstand, dresser, and a couple of accessories. Keep it simple and again less is more especially when selling your home.

The Yard

Outdoor space is not always essential or important to others. But if you do have outdoor space, consider yourself lucky and with an advantage. Depending on where you live, having an area outdoors can also be a nice added value when in the process of selling your home. The big-ticket items I would recommend are to have seating, easy space for company, if you have animals, always have some grassy areas. Using flowers and possible trees is always a great way and easy way to dress up the outdoors. If your space permits it adding some cool lighting can transform an area tremendously. And a glass of wine or a refreshing cocktail by the pool never hurt anyone.
